PEA is a naturally occurring fatty acid amide that may help reduce pain and inflammation.
It is used as an adjunct treatment for chronic pain conditions, including neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, and pelvic pain.
Your doctor or pharmacist may prescribe PEA for another reason—if so, follow their advice.
Tell your pharmacist if you:
PEA is generally considered safe with other medications. However, it is recommended that you tell your prescriber, or pharmacist about other medications you are taking.
Follow the label or the instructions provided by your pharmacist.
A typical adult dose is 400mg to 1600mg daily in divided doses, or as directed by your doctor.
Initially it is recommended to take 800mg morning and night for 2-4 weeks and the reduce to 400mg morning and night for maintenance.
Capsules: Swallow whole with a glass of water, with or without food.
Take PEA at the same times each day, as prescribed.
Continue taking PEA for as long as your doctor or pharmacist tells you. If you have taken PEA continuously for more than 6 weeks without benefit you can stop taking it at any time.
If you forget to take PEA, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume as normal. Do not take a double dose.
Immediately telephone your doctor, the Poisons Information Centre (☎ 13 11 26 in Australia), or go to Accident & Emergency if you think you or anyone else may have taken too much PEA. Do this even if there are no signs of discomfort.
| Common (≥1 %) | Less common / rare (<1 %) |

Most side effects are mild and short-lived.
Stop taking PEA and seek medical advice if you experience severe or worrying symptoms.
